The title says it all in summing up this excellent album by in-demand session artist Marcus Deml. You may not instantly recognize the name but you've probably heard Marcus' playing, as he has been featured on numerous releases and toured with artists ranging from Kingdom Come and Saga to Nena and Rick Astley. On MODERN HIPPIE, Marcus brings an early '70s blues rock vibe forcefully into 2008 with help from vocalist Robbie Smith, bassist Frank Itt, and drummer Zacky Tsoukas. Robbie Smith really conjures Glenn Hughes on vocal tracks such as "Connected," "Watch My Cloud" and "Heaven," while Marcus' tasty solos on "Dave," "Temporary Impression," "We Came In Peace" and "Follow Your Dream" reveal Gary Moore, David Gilmore, Jimi Hendrix and Jeff Beck influences. There are some modern sound effects mixed into the proceedings which may be a distraction to purists but overall MODERN HIPPIE is a very well produced and actualized dose of vintage rock, updated for our times... - Neal Woodall
